Sixty-three years have elapsed since the August 1945 Revolution. Many glorious events have made great landmarks in Vietnam’s 4,000-year history. However, it can be said that the last 63 years were the most resplendent, magnanimous and glorious.

In these unforgettable days, the Vietnamese nation, under the clear-sighted leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, launched the successful August 1945 revolution, established the first democratic republic in Southeast Asia, won the two wars of resistance, reunified the country and advanced towards socialism. Vietnam is now in the renewal process to integrate into the world.

The Voice of Vietnam (VOV) Radio was founded by President Ho Chi Minh five days after the establishment of the Vietnamese state. Over the past 63 years, VOV has been a historical witness and timely reporter of the most important and significant events in all social aspects. As the Party and Government’s leading means of communication and a reliable forum of the people, VOV has also contributed to preserving and developing the Vietnamese language.

VOV has been an insider to communicate Party’s guidelines, resolutions and policies to the people. It has encouraged new and positive factors and firmly fought against negative forces, erroneous arguments and standpoints of hostile forces.

During the fierce war of resistance against US aggressors, VOV was the sole mass media agency which disseminated information to people in all parts of the country, particularly those on the southern battlefields. Moreover, in many cases, it also realised special secret missions. The enemy could never know that some news bulletins, pieces of music or songs broadcasting from VOV contained an appeal to resistance fighters and an order attacks on enemy troops. Currently, VOV broadcasts in 5 channels in 11 foreign languages and 12 languages of indigenous ethnic groups in nearly 200 hours a day. It can still affirm to be the most reliable friend of listeners from all parts of the country and the world over.

VOV, with its tireless efforts, has fulfilled all tasks of a key mass media agency, making positive contributions to the cause of national construction and defense, national renewal as well as national industrialisation and modernisation and international integration. The State has acknowledged these achievements of VOV and given it many distinguished awards. VOV and its News and Current Affairs Department were conferred with the title of Labour Hero in the Renewal Process. VOV has also been conferred many distinguished honours such as Gold Star Order, Ho Chi Minh Order and Labour Order.

Allowed by the Prime Minister, VOV will launch a video image broadcasting channel at 18.00 on September 7, 2008 to mark the 63rd anniversary of its establishment. This new form of transmission will help listeners to view radio programmes on their TV sets.

VOV has matured over the last 63 years of national development, and is taking gigantic steps forward. It has a contingent of seasonal and professional editors, reporters, technicians and others who also have a firm political will and are ready to take on and fulfill any missions.

Prof. Dr. Vu Van Hien, VOV General Director
