Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung called on Finnish businesses to promote cooperation with their Vietnamese counterparts for mutual benefit at a Vietnam-Finland business forum in Helsinki on June 13.

He told about 300 Finnish businesses attending the event that Vietnam has become a reliable investment destination for foreign businesses in recent times thanks to its socio-political stability and annual high economic and export growth rates of above 7 and 20 percent, respectively.


He said that the Vietnamese Government encourages its businesses to expand cooperation and establish partnerships with foreign businesses, including those from Finland.


At the event, Finnish Foreign Trade Minister Paavo Vayrynen said that Finland is willing to transfer technology and help Vietnam increase the management capacity and develop human resources in mechanical engineering, infrastructure construction, mining, environmental protection as well as in tourism, trade and investment.


Earlier, Mr Hung paid a courtesy visit to Finland’s President Tarja Halonen who praised Vietnam’s achievements in the Doi Moi (Renewal) process and expressed pleasure at the fine development in bilateral relations.

During his talks with Minister of Employment and the Economy Mauri Pekkarinen, Mr Hung thanked the Finnish government for its effective assistance to Vietnam over the past 35 years, especially its support for Vietnam to enjoy the EU’s Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) and listing Vietnam among eight long-term partner countries for development cooperation.

He affirmed that Finland’s aid to Vietnam has been effectively used in such areas as poverty reduction, sustainable development, water supplies and forestation.


The Finnish leaders shared the view that the two governments should encourage their business communities to boost economic, trade and investment development ties from now till 2010.

Also on June 13, Mr Hung made a fact-finding tour of leading economic groups in Finland, including UPM-Kymmene – Finland’s largest paper producer and Nokia which makes up 40 percent of the world’s cell phone market share and 30 percent of Vietnam’s market share.
