During his inspection tour of the northern mountainous provinces, National Assembly (NA) Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong stopped in Yen Bai province on August 13 to work with the provincial leaders.

NA Chairman Trong highlighted efforts made by the provincial party committee and administration in implementing urgent measures to overcome the aftermath of floods. He said it is urgent to provide relief aid to flood victims and help local people quickly stabilize their lives and restore production while making good preparations for children to enter the new school year.

In the long term, he said, Yen Bai should co-ordinate with relevant ministries and agencies to pay due attention to improving forecast work and taking effective measures to prevent and control floods.

According to statistics, Yen Bai is one of the hardest-hit provinces. The floods have submerged and destroyed more than 1,000 houses, over 3,760 hectares of subsidiary crops, more than 90 hectares of fish ponds and hundreds of irrigation and transport projects, and swept away 6,650 cattle. Total losses are estimated at VND400 billion.

Visiting Ninh Thuan hamlet, Nga Quan commune in Tran Yen district, NA Chairman Trong asked local authorities to strengthen marketing management, and curb price hikes in essential goods to gradually stabilise people’s lives. He visited and presented gifts to a number of families badly hit by the recent floods in the hamlet.
