A delegation from the US House of Representatives’ Armed Services Committee has paid a working visit to Vietnam from April 5-7 to exchange views on matters relating to the two countries' relations, particularly in the search for Americans Missing in Action (MIA), economy and trade.

The delegation, led by Solomon Ortiz, Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee's Subcommittee on Readiness, is comprised of four House Representatives from both Democratic and Republican Parties.

The US Representatives paid courtesy visits to Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Nguyen Van Yeu and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Gia Khiem. The US delegation held a working session with members of the NA Committee for External Relations and the Vietnam parliamentarians' group for relations with the US and exchanged views with the American MIA Office in Hanoi.

During these meetings, Vietnamese officials expressed their satisfaction at the positive development of Vietnam-US relations that have benefited both countries in trade, economic and charitable sectors and in the fight against drug abuse, terrorism and transnational crime as well as cooperation programmes between the Vietnam Ministry of Defence and the US Department of Defence. They suggested that the US boost its support to locate Vietnamese soldiers, classified as MIA, and help Vietnam destroy landmines and support victims of Agent Orange/dioxin.

Both sides expressed their readiness for frank and constructive negotiations on remaining differences.

Mr Ortiz praised Vietnam’s socio-economic development and international integration, particularly its cooperation in the MIA programme. He affirmed the US is willing to continue government exchanges to enhance US-Vietnam ties.
