The final round of the Vietnam Innovation Day 2008 contest was launched in Hanoi on June 16 to raise public awareness of food safety and hygiene.

Over the past month, the organising board has selected 36 out of the 231 entries for the final round, of which the 20 best ones will be awarded US$15,000 each.

According to Nguyen Hung Long, a representative of the National Agency for Food Safety and Hygiene, as food safety and hygiene is a burning issue in Vietnam, projects will be carried out across the country for the benefit of the general public.

Among the short-listed entries is a radio programme entitled “Central Highlanders with safe farming practices” produced by Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV) Bureau in the Central Highland region.

In the programme, specialists will discuss safe farming techniques to help farmers, particularly ethnic minority people, in the Central Highlands to raise their production output and income.

About 500 radio receivers will be distributed to six ethnic groups: J’Rai, Ede, Ba Na, Se Dang, K’Ho and M’Nong when the programme is broadcast in July 2008 in Vietnamese and six ethnic languages. Copies of the programme on CDs will be distributed to the ethnic groups for further study.
