The great victory in April 30, 1975 was considered one of the country’s greatest and most brilliant historical events, completing the people’s national democratic revolution and opening a new era of development for Vietnam.

Ho Chi Minh City held a grand meeting on April 30 to mark the 35th anniversary of Southern Liberation and National Re-unification (April 30), and the 124th anniversary of May Day (May 1) and to receive the Gold Star Order from the State President.

Present at the meeting were President Nguyen Minh Triet, Politburo member and Standing member of the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee, Truong Tan Sang, Politburo member and Deputy Prime Minister, Truong Vinh Trong, Party and State leaders, and revolutionary veterans along with international delegates from Russia, Laos, Cambodia and China.

Speaking at the ceremony, Le Thanh Hai, Politburo member ad Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City’s Party Committee, emphasised that the spring 1975 victory was the most significant landmark in the national democratic revolution, opening new era of national independence, reunification, peace and socialist construction for the prosperity and happiness. The victory was attributed to the clear-sighted leadership of the Party, the bloc of great national unity and the historical tradition of brave struggle and resistance of the nation.

After the great spring victory in 1975, Vietnam has continued to make progress in national construction and defence. Over the past 25 years of the renewal process, localities, particularly Ho Chi Minh City, have gained significant achievements, to get the country out of its underdeveloped nation status.

Mr Hai stated that over the past 35 years, Ho Chi Minh City has upheld the revolutionary spirit of unity and creativity and has become driving force behind the country’s economic development.

On the occasion, Ho Chi Minh City was awarded the gold star order by the State President.

*** State President Nguyen Minh Triet, deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong and more than 13,000 army officials, soldiers and local people attended a meeting in Binh Duong on April 29 to mark the 35th anniversary of Southern Liberation and National Re-unification.

Speaking at the event, President Triet praised the province’s achievements and urged it to make greater success.

Binh Duong was a fierce battlefield during the two resistance wars against colonialists and imperialists. The sites of glorious victories, such as Dau Tieng, Bau Bang, Base D, and Tam Giac Sat (Iron Triangle) have gone down in history. 35 years ago, people and armed forces launched an offensive to liberate Dau Tieng on March 13, cutting off a defensive line north of Sai Gon, and creating a strategic corridor stretching from Binh Phuoc to north Cu Chi. Binh Duong people and armed forced took advantage of this opportunity and attacked enemy military bases, contributing to smashing the puppet government wining the final victory on April 30, 1975.

Since liberation, the Binh Duong provincial Party Committee, administration and people have promoted the revolutionary spirit by taking part in emulation movements, healing the wounds of war and developing the province. Now Binh Duong is one of the provinces boasting highest economic growth rate in the current process of national industrialisation and modernisation.
