Almost 4 ha of saline-submerged land in Ninh Hoa district in the south central coastal province of Khanh Hoa were put under mangrove on July 25-27 under a Japan-Vietnam afforestation programme.

The programme was carried out by the Action for Mangrove Reforestation (ACTMANG) of Japan in coordination Japan’s Tokio Marine, the Centre for Research of Environment and Natural Resources under the Hanoi National University and Khanh Hoa province.

It was aimed at recovering mangrove forests in countries coping with the risk of saline intrusion into the mainland.

Since 1992, the programme has helped to grow over 2,500 ha of mangrove forests in Vietnam's coastal cities and provinces. The total area includes about 20 ha in Khanh Hoa province.
