Vietnamese female footballers beat their Thai rivals 2-1 in a long-awaited semi-final on October 18 to take on Australians in the final clash of the 2008 Southeast Asian Women’s Football Championship (AFF Cup) in Ho Chi Minh City.

Tran Thi Kim Hong put Vietnam ahead from a penalty kick in the 4th minute after the ball hit a Thai defender’s hand in the danger box.

After 15 minutes, Vietnamese played slowed down the tempo and it was time Thai players came up with counterattacks from the two wings, but they missed at least two chances to score goals.

In the last minutes of the first half, Minh Tuyet hit the ball past the woodwork when she came face to face with the Thai goalie.

In the 47th minute of the game, the Thai goalie committed a foul on Ngoc Cham, and it was Kim Hong again who scored another goal from the penalty spot to extend the lead for Vietnam.

Two minutes later, Thai striker Nisa hit the back of the Vietnamese net with a headed goal after keeper Kieu Trinh failed to control the ball in the penalty box.

Thai players applied the pressing tactics in the hope of equalising the scoring, but no more goals were scored.

On October 20 Vietnamese women will play the final game against Australians who trounced Myanmar players 5-1 in another semi-final.
