Forum seeks to attract more FDI into agricultural sector

VOV.VN - Foreign direct investment (FDI) has made significant contributions to developing the agriculture sector by supplementing capital sources, increasing exports, and generating jobs, according to industry insiders.

This assessment was made by experts at a forum held on December 9 in Ho Chi Minh City to promote investment into the Vietnamese agricultural sector and to accelerate a new wave of FDI in the development of sustainable agriculture.

However, FDI inflows in the sector remain limited, said experts, adding that the total number of valid projects in the agricultural industry between 2009 and 2021 reached 1,984, accounting for 5.7% of the total number of FDI projects.

Insiders have therefore attributed the situation to and manipulation of foreign-invested enterprises towards domestic firms and the Government's support policy which has caused difficulties for FDI firms gaining access to agricultural land and inadequacies in logistics services and infrastructure for agricultural development.

Furthermore, according to the regulation, foreign-invested enterprises cannot directly purchase agricultural products, a factor which has caused difficulties for FDI firms seeking to develop agricultural projects in the country.

Dr. Nguyen Anh Phong, director of the Information Center for Agriculture and Rural Development, emphazised that the State must strive to improve the investment climate, fine-tune the legal system on land, develop infrastructure in the agricultural sector, and develop criteria to selectively attract FDI projects in the industry moving forward.
