COVID-19: Daily count rises sharply to over 11,000, Hanoi tops localities
VOV.VN - The daily number of coronavirus infections surprisingly rose sharply on February 4, peaking at more than 11,000, after falling to 10,000 or even 9,000 on previous days.
Official data from the Ministry of Health (MoH) shows Vietnam recorded 11,594 cases in 59 cities and provinces across the country during the past 24 hours.
Of the total, 7,062 cases were documented in the community, eight returnees from overseas tested positive and the remainder were detected in the lockdown or quarantine areas.
Hanoi capital in the north topped localities in infection numbers at 2,756. followed by Da Nang, Nam Dinh, Quang Nam, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc, Hai Duong, Hai Phong and Thanh Hoa that registered several hundred cases each.
Ho Chi Minh City that was the epicenter of the fourth coronavirus outbreak several months ago confirmed only 66 new cases, a sharp fall compered to more than 15,000 cases daily recorded during the height of the outbreak last August and September.
With the prolonged outbreak brought under control, people wishing to g out for the lunar New Year celebration are required to strictly follow COVID-19 guidelines. However, Health Minister Nguyen Thanh Long warns the daily number of infections is likely to go up after the nine-day holiday that falls Sunday, February 6.
As of 06pm on February 4, Vietnam has detected 2,315,689 COVID-19 cases since the start of the outbreak, ranking 31st out of 225 countries and territories worldwide.
Of the infected patients, 2,102,456 have been discharged from hospital after making a full recovery from the virus, and 38,147 patients have died of the disease.
The number of Omicron infections has risen to 192 in 16 localities, including 92 cases confirmed in Ho Chi Minh City, 27 in Quang Nam, 20 in Quang Ninh, 14 in Hanoi, and 11 in Khanh Hoa.
More than 181 million vaccine doses have been administered nationwide, with over 74 million people getting their second shot and 28 million people receiving their additional shot/booster jab.
