Vietnam expects Dutch businesses to increase investment in high-tech fields

VOV.VN - Vietnam is keen to strengthen ties and investment links with Dutch businesses in high-tech fields locally, as well as in industries where Vietnam has needs and the Netherlands has strengths, said Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte joined his Vietnamese counterpart PM Chinh to attend the Vietnam - Netherlands High Technology Forum and Green Economy Forum 2023 in Hanoi on November 2 as part of his two-day official visit to Vietnam.

At the Vietnam - Netherlands High-Tech Forum, delegates discussed many topics related to fields such as Vietnam moving to a higher position in the high-tech value chain, perspectives from global businesses, and developing and nurturing Vietnamese high-tech talent in line with relevant strategies and recommendations.

In his address Dutch PM Rutte recalled PM Chinh's visit to the Netherlands in December, 2022, during which the latter visited the Dutch High-Tech Park and wished to build a similar centre in Vietnam.

He expressed his joy that after only 11 months the nation has its own Innovation Center and a Research and Development Center.

The Dutch PM stated that during his ongoing visit he was accompanied by a delegation of nearly 30 leading Dutch high-tech enterprises. Many of them have begun to run investment projects, while others are learning about future investment and co-operation in Vietnam.

For his part, the Vietnamese Government chief said that in the country's development strategy Vietnam considers science and technology to be one of the top national policies, a driving force and pillar of socio-economic development.

He asked Dutch businesses to invest and expand business investment in the country as part of efforts to help Vietnam build and fine-tune institutions, policy mechanisms, and promote technology transfer and human resource training.

This is in addition to helping the nation in scientific management, enabling it to keep up with advanced countries, PM Chinh said, while asking Dutch businesses to swiftly devise specific plans to invest and connect with Vietnamese businesses through modern, value-added, and highly competitive technology projects with the ability to join the global value chain.

At the event, the two PMs, officials, and businesses of both countries witnessed the handing over of co-operation documents between Vietnamese and Dutch agencies and businesses operating in innovation and finance.

Upon addressing the Green Economy Forum, PM Chinh said that the green and sustainable economic development is the key and a mandatory direction for countries around the world.

He highly appreciated the pioneering role of the EU in promoting the building of a green and circular global economy.

He welcomed and supported important EU strategies and initiatives such as the green deal, global gateway, marine economic strategy, and digital economy, with many specific steps in various fields.

PM Chinh affirmed that the Vietnamese side upholds the concept of inclusive, green, and sustainable development, with the ultimate goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050 and signing the Political Declaration establishing the Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) with the G7 group and international partners, including the EU.

Vietnam is ready to share its potential and strengths, as well as co-operating with EU partners in promoting green energy conversion, developing renewable energy, and green hydrogen.

PM Chinh requested that ministries, sectors, localities, and the business communities of Vietnam and the EU promote and concretise existing co-operation commitments between Vietnam and the European bloc, while taking full advantage of the EVFTA, especially in green transformation, circular economic development, climate change response, digital transformation, smart agriculture, and low emission industry.

He proposed that the remaining EU member states move to swiftly ratify the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) and soon remove the IUU yellow card placed on Vietnamese seafood.

The Vietnamese Government leader affirmed that the country is fully committed to always protecting the legitimate rights and interests of foreign investors in any case, always accompanying businesses to overcome challenges and difficulties, and capitalizing upon opportunities and advantages to help them ensure their stable and long-term operations in Vietnam in the spirit of "harmonious benefits, shared risks".
