US Congressmen pay tribute to John McCain in Hanoi

VOV.VN - A delegation of US Congressmen led by Senator Jeff Merkley has laid a wreath at the monument to late Senator John McCain in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, during their visit to the country.

The delegation, comprising Senators Jeff Merkley and Chris Van Hollen, and Representatives Lloyd Doggett, Pramila Jayapal and Ilhan Omar, called at the monument on April 8, according to the US Embassy in Hanoi.

McCain of USNAF was arrested after his aircraft was shot down by a Vietnamese surface-to-air missile at Yen Phu power plant in Hanoi on October 26, 1967.

He had made practical contributions to the Vietnam - US relations during the process of normalization of relations between the two countries. The Senator died on August 25, 2018.

The monument is often visited by American officials while visiting Vietnam. US Vice President Kamala Harris and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin also came to lay flowers in front of the site in 2021.

The US Congressmen are in Vietnam for a visit from April 7 to 11. The visit, according to Senator Jeff Merkley, is to promote the settlement of war consequences and cooperation between the two countries.

During a press conference on April 8, Merkley and his colleagues all emphasized that the US Congress has strong support for Vietnam.

While in Hanoi, they met with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, and Defense Minister Phan Van Giang.

After Hanoi, they will continue their trip in Ho Chi Minh City and several southern localities.
