The World Wild Fund for Nature (WWF) Greater Mekong Programme has launched a project titled “A matter of attitude - Reducing the consumption of wildlife products in Hanoi” for the 2005-2007 period.

The project, funded by the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), aims to raise awareness and change attitudes towards illegal wildlife consumption in Hanoi.

At the launch ceremony on April 7, WWF presented the Hanoi Forest Protection Department with equipment and a small grant to set up a wildlife trade hotline for the public to alert officials of wildlife crimes in Hanoi.

The project 's series of print advertisements were disseminated, and a writing contest for high school students to submit ideas for televised advertisements focusing on stopping illegal wildlife consumption was launched.

Vietnam is the world's 16th most biologically-diverse nation with 75 endemic animals species. Several wild species that are endangered throughout Asia can be found in Vietnam, including the Java rhinoceros and the Asian elephants. However, the increase in the animal trade together with the destruction of habitat is threatening to destroy Vietnam's rich biological heritage.
