APEC 2017: Canadian PM reaffirms commitment to open trade

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to open and advanced trade both inside and outside the country.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to open and advanced trade both inside and outside the country.
At a press conference after the 25th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting (AELM-25) in Vietnam’s central Da Nang city, Trudeau asserted that the Canadian Government will take lead in the issue and will act for the benefits of the Canadian people.

Regarding the new agreement reached among TPP member countries on the sidelines of AELM-25, Trudeau said that he is satisfied with the advance in setting up the framework for a new TPP pact. However, he noted that there is a long way to go to ensure that they have the best deal for Canada and its people.

Canada will take time negotiating an agreement which bring benefits to all Canadian nationals, he stressed.

Earlier, trade ministers from 11 member countries of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement have agreed on core elements of the pact, which is from now on called the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

The ministers agreed not to make amendments to the original text but freeze the implementation of some clauses to ensure balance and the quality of the document in the new context.

The CPTPP is a comprehensive and high-standard agreement on the basis of balancing interests of its member countries, with regard to their development levels.
