US attaches importance to comprehensive partnership with Vietnam

VOV.VN - The United States attaches great importance to the comprehensive partnership with Vietnam, on the principle of respecting each other’s independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity and political institutions.

Visiting US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made the statement at a meeting in Hanoi on October 30 hosted by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

Pompeo affirmed the US’s strong commitment to further promoting such relationship in a deep and stable manner in the near future.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc noted that the Vietnam-US relations have developed comprehensively and substantially since both sides established diplomatic ties 25 years ago.

He thanked the government, the US State Department and Secretary Pompeo personally for supporting a strong, independent and prosperous Vietnam, as well as the development of the Vietnam - US relations.

He also expressed his thanks to President Donald Trump and the US government for their practical and timely support to Vietnam in responding to the recent COVID-19 pandemic and floods in the central region.

The Vietnamese leader welcomed the two sides’ continued efforts to effectively implement the action plan towards a harmonious and sustainable trade, while emphasizing the strategic scope of energy cooperation in bilateral relations, including increasing LNG imports from the US.

He also affirmed that Vietnam is committed to creating an open and transparent investment and business environment for businesses from countries, including the US, to operate efficiently in the long term in the country.

Both host and guest shared positive reviews on the results of the Indo-Pacific Business Forum that took place in Hanoi on October 28-29.

The US Secretary appreciated the signing of commercial contracts worth billions of US dollars at the forum, which he said contributed to boosting harmonious and sustainable trade ties.

He affirmed that the US supports ASEAN’s central role in Southeast Asia, and wishes to promote the ASEAN-US strategic partnership, as well as the Mekong-US partnership to develop substantially and effectively.
