Can Tho, Japan group bolster trade promotion

The Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) in the southern city of Can Tho signed a memorandum of understanding on trade cooperation with Japan’s Brain Works group on December 13.

The document focuses on implementing trade promotion activities between Vietnamese and Japanese firms, such as market surveys, consultation, training and establishment of links between Mekong Delta and Japanese businesses.

Under the MoU, a Research & Development Centre for information and communication technology (ICT) in the Mekong Delta will be established in 2017. The R&D centre will be run by a non-profit organisation and 10 Japanese firms working in programming, ICT, education, health and trade promotion.

Vo Hung Dung, Director of VCCI Can Tho said that as the Mekong Delta is a new land for foreign investors, such a centre will support the IT development of the region.

Chairman of Brain Works Kondo Noboru lauded the potential of the cty and stressed the importance of linking Mekong Delta and Japan small- and medium-sized businesses.

He said Brain Works wants to contribute to human resource training in the Mekong Delta and the application of ICT across fields.

Brain Works has operated in Vietnam for nearly 20 years, involving in investment consultation services, ICT and human resource training.

As of early 2016, Japan invested in 140 projects in the Mekong Delta worth more than US$645 million. In the first nine months of this year, an additional 12 projects worth about US$24 million were registered.
