The Nghinh Ong, Whale Worship, festival is held annually in Phuoc Hai fishing village on the 16th day of the second lunar month, with the aim to pray for peace and luck for villagers.

Since the cemetery was built in 1999, local fishermen have brought dead whales to shore for burial, believing that they will get extra luck if they see a dead whale.
