VOV.VN - The national U18 men’s football team led by head coach Philippe Troussier held their first training session on March 15 at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Centre in Hanoi in preparation for the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup.
The training camp has been held after the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U19 Championship was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The cancellation has left U19 men disappointed as they had qualified for the final round. Instead, U18 men represent Vietnam at the final round that will see them play alongside Saudi Arabia, Australia, and Laos in the same group.
The AFC have moved to change U19 competitions into U20 tournaments. The upcoming 2023 AFC U20 Championship is set to take place in Uzbekistan for the first time. Troussier has called up young footballers aged between 16 and 18 to the national line-up.
As head coach, Troussier plans to select various footballers for the many gatherings which will take place this year in preparation for both the 2023 AFC U20 Championship and the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup. Most notably, the squad’s first training session on March 15 in Hanoi sees 34 footballers take part, including those chosen not to play in the national U19 championship.
The players will gather between March 15 and March 20 for the an initial training camp, with a second taking place from April 5 to April 14.
Thanh Hoa FC and Viettel FC have sent 10 players each to the training camp.
The coaching board of the Vietnam U18 team is comprised of French head coach Philippe Troussier, his French assistant Moulay Azzeggouarh, French fitness coach Cedric Roger, and goalkeeping coach Kim Hyun-tae of the Republic of Korea.
All of the players and the coaching staff are aiming to achieve positive results at the 2023 AFC U20 Championship in Uzbekistan and at the 2023 FIFA U20 World Cup in Indonesia.
