Vietnam to move ahead with chosen path, says Party leader

VOV.VN - Vietnam will strive to build upon recent gains as it moves ahead along its chosen path, Party General Secretary and State President Nguyen Phu Trong told Party, State leaders and revolutionary veterans, during a function held on February 9 in Hanoi ahead of the traditional Lunar New Year holiday (Tet).

General Secretary Trong said that despite last year seeing local and global challenges, including natural disasters and epidemics, Vietnam recorded important socio-economic development achievements, especially in the fight against the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Most notably among these achievements, the national economy recorded growth of roughly 3%, the macro economy remained stable, and major economic balances were guaranteed. Furthermore, a breakthrough was made in the fight against corruption, while national socio-political stability, defence, security, and sovereignty were successfully maintained.

According to the Party chief, the country did a capable job last year in its capacity as the Chairman of the ASEAN Year and a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, helping to boost the country’s status both regionally and globally.

In addition, the Communist Party of Vietnam successfully organised its 13th National Congress, outlining major development goals, and orientations ahead for the nation in the coming five years and beyond.

General Secretary Trong therefore attributed these achievements to efforts made by the Vietnamese people under the clear-sighted leadership of the Party, the active and effective management of the State, as well as various Party organisations and administrations across all levels.

He used the occasion to express deep gratitude to revolutionary veterans, Party members, countrymen, and compatriots, along with Vietnamese nationals residing overseas, for their great contributions made to national development over the past five years.

Moving forward, he said 2021 will be an important year for the country as it will be the first year of the implementation of the five-year national socio-economic development plan till 2025. In addition, Vietnam will hold general elections in May in order to elect a new National Assembly, as well as new People’s Councils at all levels.

Opportunities and challenges in the year ahead therefore require the entire Party, army, and people to show strong resolve in order to successfully implement tasks set out for the year. There should be a primary focus on stabilising the macro economy, ironing out snags in the local business environment, whilst firmly defending national sovereignty, General Secretary Trong outlined.

He called on the entire Party, army, and people to promote the tradition of great national unity, patriotism, bravery, and wisdom as a means of overcoming difficulties and cultivating greater success in national development and international integration.

The function concluded with the Party chief extending Tet greetings to revolutionary veterans, Party members, and people as part of the upcoming Tet holiday.
