The signatories were Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, head of Vietnam’s mission to the UN, and Ambassador Akuei Bona Malwal, head of South Sudan’s mission to the UN.

The two sides agreed to exchange diplomatic representatives at the ambassadorial level and apply the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.

With the establishment of diplomatic ties with South Sudan, Vietnam now has diplomatic relations with 54 out of the 55 countries in Africa.

The joint communiqué was sent to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to circulate as an official document of the UN and inform other member states.

After the signing ceremony, the two ambassadors held a meeting on the promotion of cooperation between the two countries in bilateral and multilateral issues.

The two sides agreed to enhance collaboration in the fields of their strengths such as agriculture, banking, oil and gas.

South Sudan pledged to support Vietnam’s bid to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2020-2021 tenure.

The same day, the two ambassadors co-chaired a banquet with the attendance of nearly 40 ambassadors and heads of permanent representative missions and representatives of the UN Secretariat.
