COVID-19: 37 further community infections recorded, with 22 in Bac Giang epicenter

VOV.VN - Vietnam recorded 37 new local infections on May 17 morning, with all in quarantine and locked-down areas, including 22 in the Bac Giang coronavirus hotspot, according to the Health Ministry.

Among the new cases found in four northern provinces, 22 were reported in Bac Giang, 11 in Bac Ninh, 3 in Vinh Phuc and 1 in Tuyen Quang. They are mostly F1 contacts with previously confirmed COVID-19 patients.

To date, the nation has registered a total of 4,212 COVID-19 cases, including 2,746 domestic infections, 1,466 imported cases, and 2,668 recoveries.

A total of 1,176 cases have been recorded across 27 provinces and cities, since the fourth COVID-19 wave hit the nation on April 27.

May 16 saw Vietnam hit a record high of 187 community transmissions in a single day, since the pandemic broke out in Vietnam in January last year.

One day earlier, Vietnam received the second shipment of nearly 1.7 million doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine under the COVAX Facility– the global vaccine access mechanism. The first batch of COVID-19 vaccines was administered to the country on April 1.

The Health Ministry has redoubled efforts to seek vaccine sources, with around 110 million doses set to be supplied for Vietnam this year. Of which 38.9 million doses are from COVAX Facility, 30 million from AstraZeneca, and 31 million from Pfizer/BioNTech.

It has also registered to buy roughly 10 million further doses through Covax under a cost-sharing scheme at lower prices.

As of May 16, as many as 979, 238 frontline medical workers and members of the community-based anti-COVID-19 groups received COVID-19 vaccine shots, including a total of 22,561 vaccinated with full two doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine.
