Formation of Typhoon Bailu close to East Sea causes heavy rain across north

VOV.VN - A typhoon known internationally as Bailu began to form close to the East Sea on the morning of August 23, bringing with it torrential rain for localities across Vietnam’s northern region.

The centre of the typhoon was located at 16.5 degrees north latitude and 128.5 degrees east longitude at 1pm on August 23, approximately 450km east of the Philippines’ Luzon island. The strongest winds at the heart of the weather event are estimated to be at 60 km to 90 km per hour.

Over the course of the next 24 hours, the typhoon is expected to move north-west at a speed of 20 km per hour and will likely strengthen further with a maximum wind speed of 90 km to 115 km per hour close to the eye of the typhoon.

In another development, heavy rain began to hit northern localities from the evening of August 21. Provinces such as Son La, Hoa Binh, Thanh Hoa, and Nghe An, have seen rainfall of between 30 mm and 70 mm, with some places even hit with rainfall of 100 mm.

The volume of rain is expected to last several days, with residents across the north preparing for the negative effects of the weather.
