Gender equality and resettlement discussed

Integrating gender equality into resettlement plans will increase women’s participation in the decision-making process, not only at the household level but also the institutional one, heard an international workshop in the northern province of Quang Ninh on April 13.

The event was jointly held by the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, the World Bank (WB) and the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) in Vietnam.

Participants said the development of hydropower, transport and urban projects is one of the main reasons behind the resettlement. In that context, women are most susceptible and could face a high risk of poverty.

Shoko Ishikawa, Chief Representative of the UN Women in Vietnam, said Vietnam’s legal system has progressed in ensuring gender equality.

However, the biggest shortcoming at present is the rights of land use and access to financial resources and training opportunities are unequal between men and women, she noted.

Deputy Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Trong Dam asked the WB and the UN Women to increase cooperation with the ministry to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in all fields, contributing to the socio-economic development in Vietnam.

More than 100 participating delegates introduced different resettlement forms in the world and shared a lot of experience in designing gender-inclusive resettlement plans.

The conference will run until April 14.
