Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, Le Thanh Hai, said despite facing many difficulties over the past year, the city recorded tremendous achievements in socio-economic development with an economic growth rate 1.7 times higher than the national average.
In the context of runaway inflation and price hikes, the city effectively implemented social welfare programmes and provided better care for the poor.
By late 2011, the number of poor households with per capita income of below VND12 million per year dropped to 5.3 percent, enabling the city to be the leader in the lowest number of poor households.
Mr Hai attributed these results to great efforts from the Buddhist clergy and followers who made positive contributions to the development of both the city and the country.
Vice Chairman of the VBS Executive Council Most Venerable Thich Tu Nhon and Head of the Municipal Buddhist Church Executive Council Most Venerable Thich Tri Quang, thanked the Party and State for their attention to religious followers, affirming that the VBS will stand side by side with the municipal Party Committee, authorities and people to overcome all obstacles and boost the city’s development.
