Lai Chau floods cause traffic gridlock

VOV.VN - Heavy downpours on September 2 caused a series of damaging landslides and severe floods leading to traffic congestion in several areas of the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau. 

On the afternoon of September 2, flashfloods and landslides hit Lai Chau province, triggered by torrential rains which caused severe flooding in residential areas.
A serious flashflood at 5pm on September 2 on National Highway 12 caused a traffic jam between Lai Chau and Dien Bien.
Fortunately, there are no reports of causalities as the flashfloods hit at daytime.
Heavy rains also caused landslides and blocked some national highways.
The routes hardest hit by landslides are national highways 4D, 279, 112, 4H.
Thousands of cubic metres of rock and mud disrupted traffic.
Vehicles became stuck when attempting to pass many landslide and flashflood hit-areas.
There was severe flooding on several roads, leaving traffic paralyzed for many hours.
During the night of September 2, relevant units mobilized heavy machinery to clear debris on national highway 279, 4D.

 
Residential areas and houses were also submerged in floodwaters. 
Local authorities have not yet accounted for all of the damage but have dispatched relevant forces to support residents in evacuating from dangerous areas.
 
Many residents’ belongings were swept away in the floodwaters.
The worst affected areas are Lai Chau city, Sin Ho town and Phong Tho district.
Local authorities are working to gather statistics and support people’s recovery from the aftermath of the floods.
