National Reunification Day fireworks canceled amid COVID-19 fears

VOV.VN - Many localities nationwide have decided to cancel fireworks shows celebrating Southern Liberation and National Reunification Day (April 30) and May Day (May 1) in order to limit large crowds amid COVID-19 concerns.

The country’s major cities, Hanoi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City, have all made decisions to cancel their fireworks displays at recent COVID-19 meetings.

Leaders of the three cities have also requested that local departments, agencies, and localities remain vigilant in the ongoing fight against the pandemic to ensure safety throughout the holidays, and also ahead to the upcoming general elections.

Elsewhere, the northern province of Quang Ninh, home to the world natural heritage site of Ha Long Bay, has also announced the suspension of their fireworks display.

Quang Tri province has decided to cancel its fireworks show after three local people were placed into quarantine after coming in contact with a COVID-19 case in Laos.

Vietnam is facing a potential risk of a new coronavirus outbreak as an increasing number of people is seeking to illegally cross the border into southern localities Cambodia or Thailand.

In addition, there is a constant threat of a new outbreak in the community as people are flocking to tourist destinations during the upcoming four-day national holiday, starting this weekend.
