Phu Quoc island suffers historic levels of flooding

VOV.VN - Hundreds of local families were forced to be evacuated from their homes to safe shelter areas after heavy downpours lashed the island of Phu Quoc in the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang over the past few days.

Phu Quoc island has been experiencing some of the worst flooding in its history. The prolonged heavy rain has left many areas submerged, in doing so threatening the lives and property of local people.
Naval Zone 5 mobilises 350 soldiers in a bid to help with the evacuation of local residents to safe areas.
High water levels have posed huge challenges as soldiers work to support the island’s residents.
By 4:45pm on August 9 over 600 local people and much property had been forced to move to safer areas.
Many parts of the island were inundated by flooding. Naval Zone 5’s soldiers continued the evacuation process of people from dangerous areas with local forces being told to be ready in flood-hit areas to take action in order to ensure the safety of residents.
As of the afternoon of August 9, rain was continuing to fall, causing heavy flooding in many isolated communes.

The huge amount of rainfall over a number of days, combined with rising sea levels, had severely damaged the island’s drainage system that takes water to the sea. Thousands of households faced unprecedented levels of difficulties in the face of the historic flooding.
Vehicles, including motorbikes, had been used to move through deeply inundated streets. The Phu Quoc provincial People’s Committee has also been working to mobilise nearly 1,000 people to serve as rescue forces to assist residents.
Rescue forces have been divided into a number of groups to be on duty in submerged areas such as Nguyen Trung Truc street, Ben Tram bridge, Duong Dong town, Cua Duong, and Duong To communes in order to assist residents.
Severe flooding has hit streets throughout Phu Quoc island.

Phu Quoc International Airport, which connects the island to Vietnam's major cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, in addition to several Asian destinations, was forced to suspend operation on August 9. About 1,560 customers were left stranded as a result.
Nazal Zone 5’s soldiers helped evacuate residents to safer areas. By mid-day on August 10 the rain had stopped and water levels were beginning to recede.
