Remains of British hiker returned to family

VOV.VN - It was the beginning of formal mourning and a day filled with heartfelt emotion as the remains of Aiden Shaw Webb, 23, who tragically lost his life in a hiking accident while mountain climbing near Sapa were returned to his family.

“There is a certain relief that the family, after waiting so many days and not knowing what had happened to him, now have Aiden back and are able to lay him to rest,” said Nguyen Ngoc Hinh, vice chairman of the Sapa District People’s Committee.

“The grief of the family was still fresh,” said Mr Hinh, as Lao Cai provincial authorities on June 10 transferred the body of the young British mountain climber, to his family and a solemn team of dignitaries from the UK Embassy in Vietnam.

“It was a sobering reminder of how precious life is— and all our thoughts and prayers are with the family.”

According to the results of an autopsy, Aiden died as a result of complications following a fall and serious injuries to his arms and knees.

He went missing on June 4 while mountain climbing after failing to meet up with a friend on schedule.

Over the following six days, hundreds of border guards, police, soldiers, militia, rangers and locals exhaustively searched for him in vain. His body was located on June 9
at an altitude of 2800m, more than 1km from the pillar of telpher T4.
