The crew of the Vietnamese fishing vessel were made up of captain Nguyen Thanh Tam, along with crew members Le Van Hoang, Nguyen Thanh Tam, Dinh Van Trung, Do Thanh Hai, Pham Thanh Tuan, Tran Van Thinh, Tran Duy Truong, and Do Cao Vien.
According to Trinh Cong Minh, deputy director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the actions displayed by the fishermen showed deep humanity and great courage.
Their rescue attempts also follow in the strong traditions of fishermen from Tien Giang, as well as those from across the country, he added.
To mark the occasion, the military-run telecommunications company Viettel operating in Tien Giang also presented cruise monitoring equipment to Ngo Van Theng, the vessel’s owner.
The incident occurred at about 1:00 a.m. on June 10 while the TG 90983TS vessel was anchored in Vietnamese waters. Captain Nguyen Thanh Tam and his crew discovered two small boats without lights to the side of their vessel. Once nearby they could see two foreign men using hand signals requesting urgent help.
Captain Tam quickly gathered his crew together to save the two fishermen, before continuing to sail the vessel to the destination where 20 distressed Filipino fishermen were waiting to be rescued.
Following the rescue, the fishermen took them to their boat and aided them following their many hours of struggle at sea.
In addition, they also sent signals to nearby Filipino boats before handing over the distressed Filipinos.
The Vietnamese fishermen continued their fishing voyage after making sure that the Filipinos were safe before returning to shore on August 18.
