Victims of fatal Thai road accident identified

As many as 12 Vietnamese passengers and one Thai driver lost their lives when a chartered minibus crashed head-on with a trailer truck in Thailand’s Chaiyaphum province, about 500km north-east of Bangkok. Three other Vietnamese passengers were seriously injured. Most of the victims were young, with the eldest being 46 years of age.

Speaking with a Radio Voice of Vietnam (VOV) correspondent in Thailand, Consul General Nguyen Huu Dinh said two Vietnamese officers were sent to the site to identify the dead victims and assist in transporting the injured to near-by hospitals.

So far, functional agencies have identified the Vietnamese fatalities and injured, Dinh said.

“We visited the injured passengers in Khon Kaen hospital and asked local authorities to provide the best medical care for them,” he stated.

Dinh reported that religious rituals were held for those who lost their lives, whose relative are still being sought out by relevant agencies to protect their privacy and send their remains back home following Thai law.

According to the Consul General, one injured victim was taken to Chaiyaphum hospital, and two others to Khon Kaen hospital. They remain in critical condition.

The Vietnamese victims of the tragic road accident were part of a 65-member delegation participating in an exchange programme with a Catholic church in Nong Bua Lam Phu province, Dinh said.

The Overseas Vietnamese Association cooperated with Thai agencies to transport the uninjured members to a safe place in Chaiyaphum and address the issues relating to the victims, he added.
