The man was identified as Nguyen Hoang Hieu Dan, a 26-year-old who was on holiday with his family.
According to eyewitnesses, Dan was sitting away from his family on the shoreline at about 1 p.m. when a six-metre wave rolled in and swept him out into the ocean.
He made an attempt to swim back to shore but was only dragged further out to sea by the tide.
Witnesses said that other Vietnamese and foreign tourists attempted to save him, but they too were nearly swept away by the strong current.
Several minutes after the incident, Dan’s body was pushed onto the beach by the tide.
Rescue forces immediately rushed to the site of the incident and brought Dan’s body to Pratama Nusa Penida hospital to undergo further observation.
