Trang out of Vietnam Open badminton event

The Vietnamese were swept away from the Yonex Sunrise Vietnam Open Badminton Tournament on July 22 in HCM City.

The national hope and last player Vu Thi Trang retired in the women’s singles quarter-final match in which she lost 10-21 in the first set to Malaysian Cheah Soniia Su Ya.

Trang suffered a heel injury that forced her to call for medical time in this set and asked for retirement in the second.

“I had this injury prior to the Open but tried to play. However it hurts me a lot. I am sorry,” Trang said.

She worried that the injury would strongly affect her competition at the upcoming Olympics in Brazil next month.

Her retirement meant that her journey in the women’s doubles event with teammate Nguyen Thi Sen also ended.

The Vietnam Open will close on July 24 with US$90,000 delivered to winners.
