Vietnam bags seven medals on fourth day of 2018 Asian Para Games

Vietnam bagged seven medals on October 10, the fourth day of the 2018 Asian Para Games underway in Indonesia.

A gold medal came from swimmer Vo Thanh Tung who finished first at the men’s 200m freestyle S5 event. Tung managed the best overall time of 3:00.02, breaking the record of the 2010 Asian Para Games at 3:00.05 in Guangzhou, China.

“It is my third gold medal (at the competition). I have triumphed three events of different distances and broken three records,” he said. “I am very happy and satisfied with my training efforts.”

Tung will compete at the men’s 50m freestyle on October 11.

Earlier, he broke the records of both the Asian Games and Asian Para Games when he came on top in the final round of the men’s 100m freestyle S5 with 1:17.02 secs. The 33-year-old from the central province of An Giang also brought home a gold in the men’s 50m backstroke S5 and a silver in the men’s 50m butterfly stroke.

Tung is among the golden hopes of Vietnam at the continental sporting event for athletes with disabilities. At the same event 4 years ago, he claimed 5 out of 9 gold medals to the national team.

Chess players contributed two silvers to Vietnam in the women’s team standard P1 and the women’s team standard VI-B2/B3, and a bronze medal at the women’s team B1. The remaining three bronze medals were earned by swimmer Trinh Thi Bich Nhu in the women’s 50m freestyle S6, Tran Van Nguyen in the men’s shot put F40 event, and Nguyen Thi Hai in the women’s javelin F57 category.

As of October 10, Vietnam was at 12th place in the medal tally with a total of 23 medals, comprising six gold, four silver and 13 bronze medals.

The Asian Para Games, which follows the Asian Games (ASIAD) every four years, attracts athletes from 45 countries and territories in Asia this year.

The Vietnamese team comprises 75 members, including 52 athletes who will compete in seven out of 18 sports, namely swimming, track and field, weightlifting, chess, badminton, table tennis and judo.

At the previous Asian Para Games in 2014, the country bagged nine gold, seven silver, and 13 bronze medals, finishing 10th in the overall rankings.
