In photos: “Ngay Kieng gio” festival, a unique love market in northern Vietnam

VOV.VN -The Ngay Kieng gio festival (or Mi seng phay hey dao in the Dao language, which means ‘avoiding wind’) was held in Binh Lieu district’s Dong Van commune in the northern province of Quang Ninh on May 18.

The annual event, which falls on the fourth day of the fourth lunar month, is celebrated by The Dao Thanh Phan ethnic community.
The local ethnic people excitedly prepare for the festival.
According to Dao tradition, on the day of the festival, they will not engage in any production activity such as going to the field or hoeing, due to the belief that the god of wind will cause their work to be in vain.
A number of ethnic goods are on display at the festival, including traditional costumes,

embroidered clothes, local dishes,

and production tools.
The festival also attracts the participation of the San Chi and Tay ethnic groups.

One of the Binh Lieu specialties is fried noodles (Pho Xao).

Ethnic people sing traditional melodies.

The festival is among the numerous activities celebrating National Tourism Year 2018.
A number of activities are also held at the event, including an embroidery contest,
and folk game competitions.
