Vung Tau festival hosts 70 artists, troupes

More than 70 artists will perform in the annual 2016 Spring – Sea and Island Festival at the Youth Cultural House in Vung Tau City today as the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday approaches.

The event will feature cultural and art shows performed by dozens of veteran and young artists from traditional art troupes.

The festival includes cai luong (reformed theatre) and tai tu (traditional tunes of the south) performances, as well as calligraphy painting displays and traditional game and sport competitions.

Participants will be encouraged to paint and write their best wishes to soldiers on an oversized greeting card.

The festival's themes highlight Vietnam's seas and islands sovereignty.

More than 300 navy soldiers and police will be invited to participate in the event. Some of them will talk about their life and work with young audiences.

The festival will include a music and song gala tonight featuring hundreds of students from local schools.

Street shows featuring folk art and games will begin at 8pm until late night.

The organisers, the city's Youth Union in co-operation with Youth Cultural House and Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, said they had received support from the city's People's Committee and other offices and organisations.

Last year, the festival was organised at the HCM City Youth Cultural House, attracting more than 10,000 young people.
