RoK, Vietnam cooperate in razing phishing gang

(VOV) - The Republic of Korea (RoK) police have cooperated with relevant Vietnamese agencies to arrest 34 people of a phone phishing scram ring, which includes 31 Korean, two Vietnamese and one Chinese.

According to a report from the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA), the gang leader, surnamed Kim, 32, had allegedly set up a call center in Ho Chi Minh City. They pretended to be police, prosecution officials or Korean bank staff and then called and induced unspecified individuals in the RoK to wire money into their bank accounts under the pretext of deposit protection.

From April to September, they swindled 210 Korean people out of 490 million won (around VND9.6 billion).

The SMPA is chasing the two remaining people and expanding investigation.
