New Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa due to visit Vietnam today

VOV.VN - Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa is scheduled to arrive in Hanoi on October 20 for a two-day visit to Vietnam at the invitation of her Vietnamese counterpart Bui Thanh Son.

This is Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa’s first visit to Vietnam after she was appointed head of Japanese diplomacy by Prime Minister Kishida Fumio.

While staying in Hanoi, Minister Kamikawa is expected to hold talks with Minister Son and have meetings with senior Vietnamese leaders.

Vietnam and Japan established diplomatic relations on September 21, 1973, and 2023 marks half a century of the diplomacy between the two countries.

Since the beginning of this year, the two countries have held nearly 500 activities to celebrate bilateral relations. Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko visited Vietnam on September 20-25.

Vietnam - Japan relations are developing comprehensively in all fields with high political trust, according to Pham Thu Hang, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Japan is Vietnam’s leading economic partner, largest in ODA aid provision, second largest in labour cooperation, third largest in investment and tourism, and fourth largest in trade. Two-way trade last year reached nearly US$50 billion, including US$24.2 billion from Vietnamese exports.

Japan is the partner that has signed the most bilateral and multilateral free trade agreements with Vietnam, including the ASEAN-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (AJCEP) and the Vietnam-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement. (VJEPA), the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).

Vietnam is one of Kamikawa’s stopovers during her Southeast Asian tour from October 8 to 13 that also takes her to Brunei, Laos and Thailand.
