Swimmer Thanh Tung loses out in Tokyo 2020 Paralympics
VOV.VN - Vietnamese swimmer Vo Thanh Tung failed to defend his four-year record and was ousted from the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics in Japan on the September 1 competition day.
Competing in the men’s 50m freestyle S5, Thanh Tung finished 12th out of a total of 16 athletes, recording a time of 35.91 seconds.
At the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games in Brazil, Tung won a silver medal in the men’s 50m freestyle S5 with a time of 33.94 seconds.
Eight swimmers with the best results managed to secure berths in the final round which took place on the same day.
The winner was Yuan Weiyi of China after clocking a time of 31.30 seconds, breaking the Paralympic record. His teammate Zheng Tao came second with a time of 31.81 seconds.
The Paralympic Games is currently underway in Tokyo, attracting the participation of 4,403 athletes from around the world competing in 22 different sports.
The Vietnamese team has sent seven athletes to compete in swimming, weightlifting, and track-and-field. Weightlifter Le Van Cong is the only athlete who has won a silver medal in the 49 kg weight category for Vietnam.
The Paralympic Games is due to last until September 5.
