Members of Iraq's new parliament met on Saturday to vote on a new prime minister and other posts after months of wrangling over candidates.

The dominant Shia bloc picked Jawad al-Maliki as its nominee on Friday after the current premier, Ibrahim al-Jafaari, bowed out.

Jalal Talabani, a Kurd, is the presidential nominee while a Sunni, Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, has been proposed as the speaker.

Sunni, Kurdish and secular groups had opposed Mr Jaafari.

Sunnis have indicated they will back Mr al-Maliki and it seems likely a new government can be formed at last.

Other posts due to be endorsed include the president and parliamentary speaker, and their deputies.

It will be the first cabinet since Iraq held a general election in December, and only the second time Iraq's new parliament has met.
