The second phase of a project to improve plant productivity began on April 10 in the Mekong Delta province of Can Tho.

The 200,000-USD project, funded by the Rockefeller Foundation of the US, aims to apply environmental conservation solutions for raising the productivity of drought-resistant food crops in mountainous areas, including maize, soya-beans and groundnuts.

The project is the first of its kind to be carried out in the Central Highlands and the western part of southern Vietnam on a trial basis, with a view to improving local inhabitants' living conditions.

In the first phase, which began in September 2005, the project was conducted in the Mekong Delta provinces of An Giang and Tay Ninh, with focus on experimental use of plant varieties and cultivation methods.

The second phase of the project, scheduled for completion in the third quarter of 2008, will concentrate on cultivation methods, transfer and selection of varieties and expansion of cultivated areas. The introduction of cultivation methods to farmers of other countries, including Laos and Cambodia, will be also boosted during this stage.
