Ca Mau eyes to take 1,000 labourers abroad

The southernmost province of Ca Mau will strive to send 1,000 local labourers to work abroad during 2018-2020, heard a conference held in the locality on May 24.

Some 340 labourers will work under contract in Australia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Taiwan (China) every year.

According to Truong Linh Phuong, Director of the provincial Department of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, under the project, the province will channel focus on training skillful workers so that they can master advanced equipment and technologies.

The project will priotise relatives of people who rendered services to the revolution, ethnic people, impoverished people, and those whose agricultural land is revoked. Also, it will pay due attention to creating jobs for graduates, helping them gain experience and improve profession.

Local labourers will receive a maximum financial support of VND13.8 million (US$607.2) each to cover vocational and foreign language training fees and living and travelling costs. Those who go to work in foreign countries will be assisted with visa fees.

The project will be carried out at a total expenditure of VND125 billion (US$5.5 million), VND34 billion (US$1.49 million) of which, coming from the national fund, will be used to provide initial support for 260 labourers. Meanwhile, capital from the national target programme on sustainable poverty reduction will give non-refundable support to 40 workers.

The provincial budget will set aside VND179.4 million (US$7,890) to aid near poor residents in impoverished and disadvantaged communes. 

Than Duc Huong, head of the project’s steering board and Vice Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee, said that the province has more than 708,000 labourers, or 56% of the total population. Of the total, workers in rural areas account for 79% and unemployment rate is now at 2.38%. 

Employment support policies are necessary for the local sustainable socio-economic development, he said.
