Connecting Vietnamese businessmen abroad for national development

VOV.VN - The fourth Congress of the Business Association of Overseas Vietnamese (BAOOV) took place on January 27 in Ho Chi Minh City to review the 2018 to 2023 term, outline orientations and tasks for the 2023 to 2028 period, and to elect the Executive Committee for a new term.

In his address, Nguyen Manh Dong, vice chairman of the State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese Affairs (COVA), affirmed the consistent viewpoint of the Vietnamese Party and State that always considers the Vietnamese community abroad as an inseparable part of the nation.

This growing community will contribute to affirming the country's position, whereas its position will support the development of the Vietnamese community abroad, including the business one, he emphasized.

On behalf of the COVA, Dong acknowledged and praised the BAOOV for making positive and important contributions to boosting economic growth, as well as recording other national development achievements.

The association has moved to implemented a wide range practical and effective activities, especially in terms of intensifying trade activities, connecting businesses, and developing distribution channels for Vietnamese goods abroad.

It has actively encouraged people and the overseas business community to support more than VND200 billion for volunteer activities as a means of contributing to COVID-19 pandemic prevention and control efforts in the country.

Furthermore, it has made every effort to attract, mobilize, and admit more new members, including many young entrepreneurs with a view to expanding the network and presence of Vietnamese businesses in different countries and territories around the world.

The Vietnamese business community abroad boasts abundant resources, knowledge, experience, high scientific and technological level, and a network spread in many areas globally. It has successfully made very positive contributions to the process of national construction and development moving into the new situation.

A typical example is remittances transferred to Ho Chi Minh City in 2023 which reached more than US$9.4 billion, higher than the total foreign direct investment in the southern city. This is a testament to the efforts and solidarity of the Vietnamese people.

The COVA believes that it will constantly strive to innovate operations, reinforce solidarity, and strengthen efforts in a bid to fulfill all the set targets.

It also pledges to closely accompany the BAOOV and all members, striving to build an increasingly strong community of Vietnamese people abroad, thereby helping to promote the cause of national industrialization, modernization, and international integration, Dong went on to say.

The Congress passed a resolution underlining the need for innovation in organization and operations, while also setting up a global network of links to further augment ties between Vietnam and other countries in the fields of economics, trade, science, and technology.

In the new term, the group will focus on promoting trade and investment alongside business ties, whilst also seeking investment opportunities to develop businesses, attract overseas Vietnamese, especially a team of experts, talented overseas Vietnamese intellectuals, and young people.

This is in addition to stepping up the effectiveness of propaganda of Party and State guidelines and policies to the business community and Vietnamese people abroad.

The Congress elected the Association's Executive Committee for the 2023 to 2028 term, including 43 members, with Dr Nguyen Hong Hue (Peter Hong) elected to the position of chairman.

Currently, the BAOOV has more than 400 affiliated members based in 40 countries and territories. The association strictly abides by the Party's guidelines, the legal policies of the Vietnamese State, and the laws of host countries when carrying out the mission of connecting and attracting resources of Vietnamese entrepreneurs around the world for the purpose of national construction and development, serving as a bridge between the national economy and the world.

Over recent years, the group has effectively carried out hundreds of investment and trade promotion activities, introducing and bringing Vietnamese export goods to the world. It has also established and developed a system of seven hubs aimed at promoting and displaying Vietnamese goods abroad.

It has also encouraged overseas Vietnamese and the overseas business community to send remittances for national construction and development, with more than US$19 billion in remittances transferred to the homeland in 2023 alone.
