According to the Department of Animal Health, the development of "blue ear" in pigs remains complicated. The disease is becoming widespread and is likely to reach epidemic proportions if the country does not take drastic preventive measures.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on July 24 sent an urgent telegram asking all provinces and cities to mobilise their resources to control outbreaks in the affected areas and prevent disease spreading to other localities.

The Ministry demanded the culling of sick pigs, sterilizations of the affected areas, and strict control of the transportation and trading of pig products.

All provinces and cities were asked to take drastic actions to stamp out the disease at any cost. Especially, breeders should take biological safe measures and vaccinate their pigs.

The same day, the veterinary department in Ha Nam province announced that “blue ear” disease had been detected in some individual herds of pigs in Nhan Chinh commune, Ly Nhan district. Samples taken from them tested positive for the virus. On July 23, farmers in Tan Viet commune, Thanh Ha district, Hai Duong province killed another 10 pigs infected with “blue ear” disease.

Central Thua Thien-Hue province claimed to have some 27 pigs infected with blue ear disease in Quang Dien and Phong Dien districts. Authorities in nearby Quang Nam province ordered the culling of 99 infected pigs in Dien Ban and Thang Binh districts.

So far, “blue ear” disease has been discovered in 14 provinces across the country including Soc Trang, Quang Ninh, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Quang Nam, Hai Duong, Vinh Long, Ba Ria Vung Tau, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Tri, Bac Lieu, Lao Cai, Gia Lai and Ha Nam.
