Ho Chi Minh City’s consumer price index (CPI) in January has risen slightly by 0.04 percent against the previous month for the first time in the past three months but cumulatively by 16.61 percent from a year earlier.

Cultural, sport and entertainment services saw the highest price hikes, at 4.57 percent, followed by beverages and tobacco at 1.76 percent, and drugs and health care services, which rose by 1.02 percent.

Two groups of commodities experienced CPI decreases in January. Food and restaurant services fell by 0.08 percent, and transport and telecommunication services dropped by 4.41 percent.

The price of gold increased by 0.65 percent to reach VND17.3-17.45 million/tael, while the US dollar saw a rise of almost 1 percent.

The HCM City People’s Committee has urged local authorities to strengthen market management procedures and ensure a sufficient supply of essential goods for local residents during the traditional lunar New Year, whilst ensuring that there are no sudden price hikes.
