Vietnam’s second day at AIMAG

(VOV) -2012 Asian champion Ngo Dinh Nai could not win his second gold as he was unexpectedly defeated with a narrow score of 97-100 by to host Hwang Durkee in the final match of the 1-cushion carom event on July 1.

At the ongoing Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) in the Republic of Korea (RoK), Nai played well but failed to get the upper hand over his opponent in the very last minute of the match.

Earlier in the semi-finals, Nai easily thrashed Japan’s Mori Yoichirotay 100-28 while his teammate Ma Minh Cam was beaten 51-100 by Durkee.

In the women’s nine red ball event Nguyen Thi Truc Xinh were lost 0-4 to Taiwan’s Huang Hsin and in the six red ball event Doan Thi Ngoc Le were also beaten 0-4 by China’s Shi Chuxia.

***Swimmer Hoang Quy Phuoc only bagged a bronze medal in the men’s 100m butterfly event.

He came first in the qualifying round (clocked at 53”39) and only made it 52”68 later in the final round to finish third after the RoK’s Chang Gyucheol (51”65) and Indonesia (51”82).

His teammate Anh Vien was disappointedly placed 6th in the women’s 50m backstroke event after winning a gold in the 200m individual medley.

***Top seeded Le Quang Liem (elo 2,712) experienced the first defeat in his second match of the standard chess with Mongolian rival Batchuluun (elo 2,517).

This was considered a shocking defeat as other leading seeders, including Ding Liren (elo 2,702), Yu Yangui (elo 2.675) from China and Barbosa Oliver from the Philippines all bask in the glory of their victories.

Liem’s teammates Duc Hoa (elo 2,493) and Thanh An (elo 2,234) were also beaten. Only Thao Nguyen defeated the Philippines’ Herina (elo 2,180).

In the third match, Liem took advantage of his white player to beat Syria’s Akhras Khaled (elo 2,228) and his team mate Duc Hoa drew with Myanmar’s Oo Zaw

Yangui won the third match while Liren was held to a draw and Oliver was lost.

In the women’s standard event, An had her second win over Thailand’s Chanida (elo 1,837) and Nguyen again covered herself in glory by beating Uzbekistan’s Gulrukhgim (elo 2,150).

The fourth and fifth matches of the chess event are scheduled to take place on the third day of the AIMAG (July 2).
