Mai Duc Chung no longer to coach national team at Women’s World Cup

VOV.VN - Coach Mai Duc Chung of the Vietnam national women’s football team has said he will no longer coach the team at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The 72-year-old manager said on February 7 that he is rather tired and wants to retire by the end of this year.

His statement came surprisingly just one day after the national women’s team beat Taipei (China) 2-1 in a playoff match as part of the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup to cruise to the final round of the 2023 World Cup. Vietnam coached by Mai Duc Chung earlier also stunned Thailand 2-0 in another Asian Cup playoff match.

World Cup berth was the best achievement of the national women’s team, as well as coach Mai Duc Chung during his professional career.

However, the veteran manager revealed said he will try his best with his students to successfully defend their No1 position at the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) scheduled to take place in Vietnam in May 2022. In addition, he will also lead the Vietnamese team at the 2022 Southeast Asian women’s football championship in the Philippines in July 2022.

The chief coach said he will introduce a number of qualified coaches to lead the Vietnamese women's team at the coming World Cup to be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Currently, Chung’s contract with the Vietnamese women’s team is valid until the end of 2022.
