An agriculture senior official asked the Mekong delta authorities to closely follow the developments of bird flu as the disease continues to reoccur and spread in the region.

“New relapse of bird flu is possible if authorities neglect their responsibility,” Deputy Minister Bui Ba Bong said at a meeting of the National Steering Committee for Prevention and Control of Bird Flu in Hanoi on May 13.

The steering committee reported that bird flu hit another five communes in the provinces of Long An and Tra Vinh and Can Tho city from May 6-13.

As many as 6,640 infected fowls in those localities were culled, the committee said, reporting that Son La, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh and Long An provinces and Can Tho city are still affected by the disease.
