HCM City enhances partnership with World Economic Forum

VOV.VN - Ho Chi Minh City is keen to partner with the World Economic Forum (WEF) in order to leverage the outcomes of the HCM City Economic Forum 2023 (HEF 2023) for the greater development of the southern economic hub, as well as the country as a whole.

Phan Van Mai, chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, made the statement on September 15 during a meeting with Jeremy Jurgens, managing director of the WEF.

At the meeting with Jurgens, who is on a working trip to attend HEF 2023, Mai applauded the WEF for signing a joint statement on co-operation with the municipal People's Committee, a factor which will serve to create greater opportunities for HEF to become part of the WEF’s ecosystem.

He voiced his hope that the WEF will offer a chance for the southern city to demonstrate its friendliness and capability when hosting events of the WEF.

Mai briefed the guest on climate change-related challenges currently facing Ho Chi Minh City, saying that the city wants to collaborate alongside the WEF in order to gain deeper insights and assessments regarding climate change, which can then be used to review and adjust the its own development strategy.

The official thanked Jurgens for his suggestion regarding the establishment of an Industry 4.0 centre, affirming that the city possesses favourable conditions in terms of a legal framework and high-quality human resources. In addition, it boasts a strong connection and interaction between the local private business community and the wider region, all of which can contribute to making this initiative a success.

The southern metropolis pledges its responsible participation in the centre’s development and operations, Mai affirmed.

For his part, Jurgens spoke highly of the theme “Green growth - the journey to zero emissions” of HEF 2023, noting that it represents an important issue that has garnered plenty of attention from numerous countries.

The WEF was impressed with HEF 2023’s format and scale, therefore it stands ready to work with the city to jointly organise the WEF’s future events, he said.

Jurgens stressed that the formation of the Industry 4.0 centre in Ho Chi Minh City depends on three crucial factors that the municipal authorities must pay close attention to, including the alignment of policies between central and local authorities regarding development directions, the quality of the entity responsible for managing the centre, the human resources for absorbing knowledge and technology, as well as the support and collaboration of the private sector.

He therefore affirmed is readiness to partner with the southern city in looking for and selecting personnel for the centre, especially those with proficiency in the Vietnamese language, he added.

For the southern hub’s green economic and sustainable development-oriented development strategy, he said that Ho Chi Minh City needs to assess its entire energy ecosystem, including the use of smart public transport and the transformation of its urban electricity transmission system.
