GM Liem placed 14th at UK chess champs
(VOV) -Vietnam’s top chess player Le Quang Liem was beaten by India’s Chanda Sandipan in his final match of Festival Tradewise Gibraltar 2013 on January 31.
Despite having the advantage of holding the white pieces, Liem failed to dominate the match and soon lost a pawn in the 29th move and a rook in a decisive position five moves later and had to accept his defeat.
Having failed in his two recent matches, Liem dropped to 14th position in the tournament.
His previous five wins earned him 4.3 additional Elo points to make it 2,709.
Meanwhile, Russian player Nikita Vitiugov entered the group of Super Grandmasters with his total Elo points of 2,720.
After the event, Liem is scheduled to attend the Aeroflot chess tournament in Russia.
