Vietnam, New Zealand diversify education cooperation

(VOV) - New Zealand Governor-General Jerry Mateparae has joined in a ceremony committing New Zealand to further educational cooperation with Vietnam during his visit to Hanoi on August 6.

The ceremony also gave the NZ Governor-General a chance to meet with the many Vietnamese students and cadres who have spent time in New Zealand over the years and hear their impressions of their “kiwi” ties.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan expressed delight at the rapidily expanding educational cooperation between the two nations.

He told the ceremony more than 400 cadres have attended NZ’s English Language Training for Officials (ELTO) program over the past 20 years.

Numerous Vietnamese students have received post-graduate scholarships from the New Zealand Government or completed training through courses offered by New Zealand’s educational institutions.

Governor-General Mateparae identified education as his country’s top priority in its bilateral relations with Vietnam.

Last year, more than 2,000 Vietnamese students studied in New Zealand, an increase of more than 90 percent compared to 2008. Vietnam has the ninth highest number of international students at New Zealand institutions.
